The erosion of skills with AI

An essay about the skill erosion caused by AI

As you might have noticed, AI is a very controversial topic. Some love it, some hate it, some think it will bring hell upon us…😬

To be honest, AI existed before all these LLM (Large Language Models) shenanigans. But do you know, what is different now than in the early stages of AI?

AI is more than ever used to replace foundational skills I think every human should master to at least a mid-level degree.

Otherwise, I think you’d really struggle in your professional and even your personal life.

So you might ask… “What are these so called ‘foundational skills’ I’m talking about?”

Just to list a few of the skills I think everyone should have:

  • basic researching skills
  • being able to communicate clearly (written and spoken!)
  • being able to learn new things
  • critical thinking (likely the most important one for dealing with AI)

And those are just the ones that come to my mind!

The thing is, just because AI helps you with these things doesn’t mean you should always use it. Because when you do, you forget how to do this on your own.

Also, sometimes a process has to feel difficult or confusing or frustrating, because it’s actually in these moments where you learn the most!

We all remember trying to solve one hard problem (doesn’t matter if it was in maths or languages, any subject will do) and getting stuck on it. But also the amazing satisfaction when you finally got the hang of it!

I think if it wasn’t for me learning English for example - the language I’m speaking to you right now! - I wouldn’t be writing this blog post🙃

The point I’m trying to get across, is that it isn’t if you love or hate AI. Nobody is forcing you to use it (or at least I hope no one does😅). It’s more about how you use it, if you choose to do it or what you do instead if you don’t choose to use it.

AI can be helpful, can be bad for the environment, can boost your productivity and can violate copyright. And all of these things can be true at once!😁

So now I wanna know from you. What is your thought on AI? How will it impact us in your opinion? And which skills are essential in your repertoire?🤔

I look forward to hearing from you soon! Feel free to reach out via email by clicking on the mail icon below or leaving a comment by signing into your GitHub account!😼
