Finding your niche
There’s a time for every programmer where they have to decide in which area they wanna specialize. Sooner or later, you’ll notice the areas that you’re interested in and the areas which you start to avoid a little.
Just to be clear, I’m not talking about avoiding fundamental skills you’ll need in almost every area of this profession, but key areas relevant to a specific area. Because you’ll most likely not need to know about a microcontrollers when programming a website or developing an iOS/Android app.
So now the question turns from “What should I learn?” to “What do I want to learn?”
As with every decision you’ll make in your life, there are multiple things involved in making it. Question you should ask yourself when choosing your profession are:
- “What area of programming interests me most?”
- “What do I need to work in this area?”
- “What are my chances of breaking into this area when I develop the skillset needed for it?”
- “Is there any option that looks as good or better when I think about it?”
- “Which area is currently the best fit given the answers above?”
Of course they’re more questions you can ask yourself, but I compiled a small list of the ones I think will help you the most.
